An Information Guide about Urns for Airline Travels

Cremation Urns and Information for Airline Travel

There are guidelines which need to be followed when traveling with cremains, but when well informed, many individuals will find that transporting ashes is often easier done than said. This is espcially true for those who take advantage of a cremation urn for airline travel. These wonderful vessels are nothing short of their dignified, and more permanent, counterparts, but allow the safe and easy transport of the cremated remains. While these vessels are approriate for most airlines, it is still very important to contact the specific airline you are traveling with to verify their policies regarding traveling with the ashes. The TSA - Transportation Security Administration has come up with regulations in regards to traveling with cremains. Those guidelines where created after 9/11 because airline security needed to be more enforced and stricter.

While urns for airlines are appropriate for travel, many also consider a permanent vessel upon arrival. There are a variety of different urn types to help create a final remembrance of the dearly departed that both represents their life and personality, and offers a dignified tribute to their memory.

Regulations for Airline Travel

There are two options for carrying a crematory container with you on your flight (this is provided to us by the TSA):

  • Carry-on: You are allowed to carry-on a crematory container, but it has to pass through the x-ray machine. If the container is made of a material that prevents the screener from clearly being able to see what is inside, then the container will not be allowed through the security checkpoint.

  • Checked Luggage: You could transport the urn as checked baggage provided that it is successfully screened. TSA will screen the urn for explosive materials or devices using a variety of different techniques; if cleared, it will be permitted as checked baggage only.

  • Airline Restrictions: Some airlines do not allow cremated remains as checked baggage so please check with your air carrier before attempting to transport a crematory container in checked baggage.

The TSA suggests that you purchase a temporary or permanent crematory container made of a lighter weight material such as wood or plastic that can be x-rayed. Most of the airline urns featured on Memorials.com are made of lightweight, x-rayable materials that will provide protection for the precious contents within.
