Types
Urns come in huge variety of shapes, sizes, and styles, but there are three basic types described below.
Individual urns are designed to hold the ashes of one person.
Companion urns are designed to hold the ashes of two people. Some of these have one large compartment; some have two compartments, and still others have removable “walls” to make them interchangeable.
Keepsake urns are designed to hold tiny amounts of ashes.Families often buy several of these urns so they can share the remains of their loved-one.

Size
In general the average body creates 1 cubic inch of ashes for each pound that the person weighed. So, in general, an individual urn will need to be 170-210 cubic inches, a companion urn will need to be 400-500 cubic inches, and keepsake urns can be just about any size (they are available from 2-3 cubic inches all the way to 70-80 cubic inches).
