Shopping for Cremation Urns

Shopping for cremation urns is, of course, a task that few will relish doing. And today’s huge variety of urns can make the job seem daunting. But, armed with a little basic knowledge, consumers can turn shopping for a cremation urn into a surprisingly comforting experience. We give you some of that information below.

Prices

Prices for cremation urns will vary depending upon the intricacy of design and construction and the availability of materials. Hand-made urns made from rare materials can cost thousands of dollars, and urns made via an automated process from relatively common materials will often cost less then $100.

Consumers should be careful about letting price considerations sway their decisions. More expensive does not, necessarily, mean “better.” To reach the best results in shopping for a cremation urn: Set a “high-end” amount that you are willing to spend on an urn, and select the urn the strikes you hardest within that price. Today’s urn retailers have an almost endless variety, and you will certainly be able to find “the perfect urn,” even if your budget is less than $100. In fact, you will find that, the higher your price range, the more difficult the choice will be. Do not be bashful about selecting an urn that is less expensive than you had expected. There is no shame in finding a bargain – even for a cremation urn.

Types

Urns come in huge variety of shapes, sizes, and styles, but there are three basic types described below.

Individual urns are designed to hold the ashes of one person.

Companion urns are designed to hold the ashes of two people. Some of these have one large compartment; some have two compartments, and still others have removable “walls” to make them interchangeable.

Keepsake urns are designed to hold tiny amounts of ashes.Families often buy several of these urns so they can share the remains of their loved-one.

Size

In general the average body creates 1 cubic inch of ashes for each pound that the person weighed. So, in general, an individual urn will need to be 170-210 cubic inches, a companion urn will need to be 400-500 cubic inches, and keepsake urns can be just about any size (they are available from 2-3 cubic inches all the way to 70-80 cubic inches).
