The loss of a pet can truly be one of the most devastating events that we must endure in our lifetimes. Many pet owners are often surprised by the amount of grief that is felt after such a loss. Just like those individuals that don't own pets, they are under the impression that a pet, no matter how close we became to them, is in the end, just an animal, and not deserving of such grief. This thought is actually incorrect, and those who try to suppress their grief usually end up doing more harm than good. With that said, it is more than understandable why we become so close to our furry (or scaly) companions, as well as why we feel such a hard blow when they must, unfortunately, leave our world. Our pets are certainly more than animals. They are truly constants in our lives, and wonderful sources of comfort and joy. In fact, recent studies by the American Pet Products Association (APPA) shows that many pet owners, regardless if their pet's species, report that their pets are more beneficial than troublesome in their lives, helping to encourage relaxation, and reduce stress. This only goes to show how a pet can truly be a positive influence of our lives.
